Valdarno Aretino

The Valdarno also called Upper Valdarno is bordered on the north by the Pratomagno and south by the Chianti Mountains and Valdambra.

It is characterized by multiple landscapes, from the mountain of Pratomagno, the typical Tuscan hills to particular erosion clay, The Cliffs.

The Valdarno is crossed by the ancient road Cassia Vetus, which now largely follows the road Setteponti, that from the right bank of the Arno linking Arezzo and Fiesole already in Etruscan.
It was marked by the struggle for possession of the territory in the Middle Ages, between Florence and Arezzo and the religious fervor of the time, as evidenced by the fortified villages, the New Lands (Newfoundland Bracciolini, Castelfranco di Sopra and San Giovanni Valdarno), castles, as the castle of Cennina and Montebenichi and ancient parishes as in Pian di Sco and Cavriglia.

Gropina: not far from Loro Ciuffenna is the village of Gropina built in ancient times around the beautiful Romanesque church of San Pietro in Gropina. The parish church, built in stone, is one of the most important and famous Romanesque churches in Tuscany. It was built around the twelfth century A.D. over the remains of two previous churches, dating back to the Lombard period and that paleo-Christian.
